The serial RS232 interface is disappearing from the new models of computers, specially from laptops. Many modern computer models simply do not have this interface. Until now, GPS users willing to connect to their PC's either for map data upload, or for real time navigation in PC applications, had to purchase a separate USB-to-serial converter and attach it to the GPS serial cable. Due to its nature, this solution is more expensive and bulky, and cannot handle power simultaneously. Now one single cable, having the USB plug in one end and the GPS plug in the other. A small and light box in the middle contains the necessary electronics to handle the interface conversion. Additionally, and depending in the cable model they can also provides power to the GPS. In the case of Etrex®, Geko® and Emap® models, the power is provided directly from the computer USB interface, and in other models from a car lighter plug.
